So my Grandmother (The Grand K), has been into genealogy for a long time. I have memories as a kid of her digging around looking for branches of our family tree. I always assumed that one day the itch would bite me too, and I would join her in her research and eventually take the torch.
Well, the genealogy itch to start my own learning and digging is now here.
I’ve considered joining Ancestry.com for a while since that is where she has consolidated all her info, and now she is getting me a membership! I’m so excited. I’ve always enjoyed hearing her talk about where my ancestors are from and important people in history I am related too.
My 14th Great-Grandfather came over to the USA on the Mayflower! Yes, not many families came over on that boat, and many died in the journey, but my Grandfather made it. I’m not going to say his name, but it is very neat knowing family history like that.
Yes, I could be a Daughter of the American Revolution too. I haven’t joined, but some neighbors of mine are trying to convince me. They say the organization needs new blood….I can’t say I disagree with that! Ha.
I now want to follow my family lines over seas more, as well as start a genealogy excavation for QB. To his knowledge, no one in his family has been interested in genealogy so there is a lot of work needed on his family tree.
The internet now allows us to find things in minutes that once took months. Records from all over the world are consolidated, so I can look for ancestors and distant family lines. “The Grand K” started her digging way before the internet, and for that she deserves many kudos. She has really kept with the times though and had a laptop with internet access and a digital camera when such things first became available, and yes she’s even on Facebook! LOL. The Grand K is one hip grandmother.
Studying genealogy also gives me insight to my genetics, and I eventually want to take a genealogical genetics test. Hopefully by the time I get around to that, sequencing one’s DNA will be much more affordable and I can learn about all my genetic programming! I want to especially learn the weakness of my genes, and potential for diseases and illnesses. Both QB and I did get some crappy health genes (in very different areas though…makes things exciting…yeah, that’s what we tell ourselves…lol), so ideally we would both love to learn as much as possible about our genetics. If I were really rich that’s one thing I would spend my money on -DNA testing. LOL….forget the mansion, forget the sports car, I want my DNA sequenced! Knowledge is power.
I’m intrigued and fascinated to learn more about where the bits an pieces of my DNA came from that as a whole make up everything that is me.
