In between all the grocery gathering and cooking, we found the time to save 6 hens that were destined for the stew pot. Why? They stopped laying. However, these poor hens did not stop laying because they were old. Nope. They are only 1 year and 9 months old. When we got to the place to pick them up, my suspicions were confirmed. These poor hens were not being well taken care of.
Their combs were ashy and pink as opposed to bright red. A chicken’s comb is a way to judge health. The lady appeared to only be feeding them table scraps, so after their first laying season they probably didn’t have enough protein and nutrients to carry them though another season. So, when these stopped laying not too long ago, an add was placed online selling them as stew meat or what ever.
Since we have 2 roosters, and only 1 little hen, even if these girls don’t start laying they can still keep the boys company and eat bugs. When they found the chicken feed, they went completely nuts like they were starving. They didn’t look thin, and they seemed in good spirit, but their combs definitely showed they were not being cared for properly.
Here are the new ladies on the way home. There are 4 black and white brahmas, 1 rhode island red, and 1 little bantam girl.
On the food side of things, I have been eating a little more sporadic the past several days. With trying to prepare for T-Day, and having a few funky days with the old med getting out of my system, I’ve been a bit aloof. Here is my average via CRON-O-Meter. I’m not up on my nutrition, but a few ‘eh’ days shouldn’t hurt. Tomorrow will be nothing but goody day, so normal eating won’t return for another day or two. Enjoy the T-Day vegan recipes!
